TL;DR - The Quick Version

  • We collect what we need to run the platform (account info, your activity, basic analytics)
  • We don't sell your personal data. We may share anonymized, aggregate insights.
  • Free users see ads; Capra Pro members get an ad-free experience and can opt out of data sharing
  • You can request your data or ask us to delete it anytime
  • We use cookies for basic functionality and analytics, not creepy tracking

Who We Are

The Capra Index is a cultural ranking and trading platform where users vote on matchups, trade virtual assets, and compete for seasonal prizes. We're based in the United States and operate at capraindex.com.

When we say "we," "us," or "our," we mean The Capra Index. When we say "you" or "user," we mean you, the person using our platform.

What We Collect

Information You Give Us

  • Account info: Email, username, profile picture (via our auth provider, Clerk)
  • Profile data: Bio, display name, social links you choose to add
  • Your activity: Votes, bets, trades, comments, matchups you create
  • Communications: Messages you send through our help widget

Information We Collect Automatically

  • Usage data: Pages you visit, features you use, time spent
  • Device info: Browser type, operating system, screen size
  • IP address: We hash this for ad analytics - we don't store your raw IP
  • Cookies: For keeping you logged in and remembering preferences

Information From Third Parties

  • Authentication: Clerk provides your login info (Google, email, etc.)
  • Payments: Stripe handles Pro subscriptions - we don't see your card number

How We Use Your Information

  • Running the platform: Your votes count, your trades execute, your bets settle
  • Your profile: Showing your stats, rankings, and activity to you and others
  • Communication: Responding to your support requests and sending important updates
  • Improvements: Understanding how people use the site so we can make it better
  • Advertising: Showing relevant ads to free users (Pro members are ad-free)
  • Safety: Preventing fraud, abuse, and enforcing our terms

How We Share Your Information

We don't sell your personal data.

Here's who might see your information:

  • Other users: Your public profile, votes, comments, and rankings are visible to the community. That's kind of the point.
  • Service providers: Companies that help us run the platform (Clerk for auth, Supabase for database, Vercel for hosting, Stripe for payments). They only get what they need to do their job.
  • Aggregate insights: We may share anonymized, aggregated data with partners. For example: "60% of users voted Drake over Kendrick" - not "John Smith voted for Drake."
  • Legal requirements: If we're legally required to share data (subpoena, court order), we'll comply. We'll try to notify you if we can.

Future transparency: If we ever decide to share identifiable data with third parties for monetization, we'll update this policy and notify you in advance. Capra Pro members can opt out of all non-essential data sharing.

Our Business Model (Let's Be Real)

The Capra Index is free to use. Free users see advertisements - that's how we keep the lights on. We track ad impressions and clicks using hashed IP addresses (not your raw IP) to measure performance.

Capra Pro ($5/month) removes all ads and includes additional benefits. Pro members can also opt out of aggregate data sharing.

We believe in transparency: if you're not paying, you're supporting us by viewing ads. That's the deal, and we think it's a fair one.

Cookies & Tracking

We use cookies for:

  • Authentication: Keeping you logged in
  • Preferences: Remembering your settings
  • Analytics: Understanding site usage (we use privacy-friendly analytics)

We don't use creepy cross-site tracking cookies or sell cookie data to advertisers. Your browser lets you control cookies if you want to disable them, but some features may not work properly.

Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including:

  • HTTPS encryption for all connections
  • Secure authentication through Clerk
  • Database security through Supabase
  • Regular security reviews

No system is 100% secure. If we ever experience a data breach affecting your personal information, we'll notify you as required by law.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have these rights:

Everyone

  • Access: Request a copy of your data
  • Correction: Fix inaccurate information
  • Deletion: Ask us to delete your account and data

European Users (GDPR)

  • Portability: Get your data in a machine-readable format
  • Restriction: Limit how we process your data
  • Objection: Object to certain processing
  • Withdraw consent: Change your mind about permissions you gave us

California Users (CCPA)

  • Know: What personal information we collect and how we use it
  • Delete: Request deletion of your personal information
  • Opt-out: Opt out of the sale of personal information (we don't sell it, but you have the right)
  • Non-discrimination: We won't treat you differently for exercising your rights

To exercise any of these rights, contact us through the help widget on our site.

Data Retention

We keep your data as long as your account is active. If you delete your account:

  • Your profile and personal info are deleted within 30 days
  • Your votes, comments, and activity may be anonymized rather than deleted (to preserve platform integrity)
  • We may retain some data longer if required by law

Children's Privacy

The Capra Index is not intended for children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you're a parent and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you through the site or by email. The "last updated" date at the top tells you when we last made changes.
